The answer is simple: As part of Canada's FINTRAC anti-money laundering requirements, Realtors® must ask certain clients whether they are a Politically Exposed Person (PEP), a Head of an International Organization (HIO), or a family member or close associate of one. These questions are required by law—they're not asked because anyone is suspected of wrongdoing. For most people, the answer is "No," and the process moves on quickly. If the answer is "Yes," there may be additional steps required under Canada's anti-money laundering legislation.
